Having discovered a couple 6ft ball screws at the local scrap yard, the idea was born to make a numerically controlled milling machine from scrap.

After a few iterations it was determined that at least the guide rails needed to be new material. One of the ballscrews was retained for the prototypes but an axial play of about 0.06mm or 3 thou' at mid section was outside the design tolerance of accuracy.
